The book, Summer Cottage, blends my new poetry with the most evocative linocuts and relief prints from my early days as ‘An Artist in Maine’. During the COVID years 2020 and 2021, I worked in my home studio to produce wide-ranging, unfocused images in a variety of media. One day I found the six Styrofoam prints of summer cottage rooms in a drawer. They sparked memories of old friends and our lives as summer people. I found other pictures from that time and began to write the poetry.

The illustrations are linoleum cuts or linocuts and Styrofoam prints. In relief prints, such as these, the design is drawn in reverse on a block of linoleum or Styrofoam. The whites are cut below the surface. Ink is rolled over the uncut areas of the block. Rice paper is smoothed over the inked surface and the back of the paper is rubbed with a wooden spoon until the ink transfers to the paper. Then the paper is peeled back, revealing a black and white image in reverse.
